Qualification Credit Framework (QCF) - October Update

Source: www.skillsforcare.org.uk/qcf

In January 2011 NVQs were replaced with new Diplomas and smaller Awards and Certificates for continued professional development.

The new qualifications replace the previous NVQs and VRQs and offer a new way of recognising skills and qualifications. They do this by awarding credit for qualifications and units (small steps of learning). They enable people to gain qualifications at their own pace along flexible routes.

Workers who have already undertaken relevant NVQs have got legitimate qualifications that demonstrate competency. These qualifications will continue to be recognised now that the new qualifications are in place, but they are not available for new registrations.

The new qualifications provide a flexible, 'mix and match' approach to meeting the different development needs of the workforce.

Every unit and qualification has both a credit value and a level:

  • one credit represents 10 hours of average learning time and so the credit value shows approximately how much time it takes to complete. This will be different for each learner.
  • the level shows how difficult the unit or qualification is (this can be anywhere between entry level and level 8) our sector now has vocational qualifications/units from level 1 through to level 7.

There are now three sizes of qualification:

  • Award (1-12 credits)
  • Certificate (13-36 credits)
  • Diploma (above 36 credits) - not linked to the 14-19 Diploma.

The type of qualification (award, certificate or diploma) therefore shows its size and not how difficult it is, For example: there could be Awards available at level 1 or level 8.

What has changed?

The Level 2 and 3 Diplomas in Health and Social Care (HSC) replace the Health and Social Care NVQs at level 2 and 3.

The diplomas are made up of nine mandatory units and a range of optional units. The mandatory units are very closely aligned to the learning covered by new workers in the common induction standards (CIS) and the aim is for learners from any part of the sector to complete these standards and contextualise their learning to their service/job role.

There are options to take a generic HSC Diploma or a specialist dementia or learning disability pathway which allows learners to further tailor their learning to their job role.

Leadership and Management

The Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People's Services replaces and combines the level 4 Leadership and Management in Care Services NVQ and level 4 Health and Social Care NVQ to offer a hybrid qualification.

The new combined qualification has the same mandatory units across what used to be two separate qualifications. Learners' can choose one of six pathways allowing them to tailor the qualification to their job role:

  • Management of Adult Services
  • Management of Adult Residential Services
  • Practice in Adult Services
  • Management of Children and Young People's Services
  • Management of Children and Young People's Residential Services
  • Practice in Children and Young People's Services

This will provide opportunities for progression from the HSC Senior Practitioner role to a Management role ensuring no duplication. This qualification is shared between the adults and children's sectors in England, and also allows for transfer for workers moving to Wales and Northern Ireland.

Existing Qualifications

Workers who have already undertaken NVQs have got legitimate qualifications that demonstrate competency. These qualifications will continue to be recognised now that the new qualifications are in place, but they are not available for new registrations.

REVISED Common Induction Standards - October Update

Source - www.skillsforcare.org.uk/cis.

Following consultation with the sector, Skills for Care has refreshed the Common Induction Standards to ensure they are fit for purpose and reflect current policy and practice. The standards are for people entering social care, and those changing roles or employers within social care.

The refreshed Common Induction Standards replace the Common Induction Standards 2005.

The effective implementation of the Common Induction Standards is a significant step towards the delivery of high quality care and support. The Care Quality Commission's Essential Standards of Quality and Safety highlight the importance and value of strong and comprehensive induction and they will need to be assured that all new staff have undergone a thorough induction process.

They are designed to be met within a 12 week period to enable care workers to demonstrate providing high quality care and support. It provides recognition for their work, and prepares them for entry onto future training and qualifications.

The Standards

The standards now map across to the mandatory units of the new Health and Social Care Diploma to ensure there is consistency of approach for the workforce. There are now eight standards, however they will not take any longer to complete and the core elements are still retained.

Standard 1 - Role of the health and social care worker

Standard 2 - Personal development

Standard 3 - Communicate effectively

Standard 4 - Equality and Inclusion

Standard 5 - Principles for implementing duty of care

Standard 6 - Principles of safeguarding in health and social care

Standard 7 - Person-centred support

Standard 8 - Health and safety in an adult social care setting

Each standard contains a number of areas of knowledge that care workers need to know about before they can work unsupervised. Managers have a duty to ensure new staff know enough to meet the required outcomes in each knowledge area.

If carried out in depth, they can provide excellent evidence of underpinning knowledge towards the diploma at level 2 or level 3.

Downloads

The following documents are available to download. These are: the refreshed standards with a glossary which outlines how they link to GSCC codes of practice; a progress log; a guide for those responsible for workers in an induction period; a guide for new workers; and a certificate for managers to sign to confirm that standards have been met.

Bournemouth University Opportunity

Are you interested in providing a Nutrition undergraduate with a valuable (un-paid) work experience placement?

The BSc (Hons) Nutrition programme is a three year course at Bournemouth University. The degree programme covers a number of subjects including: human nutrition, human food chain, psychology, health promotion and food safety. The students are expected to undertake an unpaid work experience placement between their second and third year. This is expected to be at least 20 days but students can elect to work for longer if mutually beneficial to themselves and the placement provider. The placement is expected to be carried out sometime between mid June and late September. In the past students have undertaken successful placements in the following areas:

  • Encouraging healthy eating in residential homes for adults with mental health problems.

  • Working alongside chefs in organisations to ensure government guidelines for nutrition and healthy eating are being met when delivering the meal service.

  • Promoting healthy eating in day centres for adults and families.

This placement is hugely beneficial to the students concerned as it gives them an opportunity to put into practice the theories learnt at university. To date we have received a great deal of very positive feedback from the placement providers about the benefits of this student experience for their organisation.

If you would like to find out more about whats involved then please e-mail Joanne Holmes or call her on 01202 961584.
